The new WDCU CMC has met twice since its formation and below is a copy of the communication sent to all club contacts this morning regarding business in hand.
Good morning,
Following the October WDCU CMC meeting a number of decisions were taken that I have been asked to update you on.
After a considerable amount of work by the previous WDCU CMC and supported by the current CMC the Saturday League structure for 2023 will now be made up of two Tiers of three divisions. Tier one will be made up of Club 1st X1’s and Tier two will be made up of a small number of one team clubs, and second and third X1’s of other clubs. Clubs / teams will be placed in each Tier in line with their finishing position in 2022 and adjusted by the CMC where required. CMC felt that the Two-Tier system was the best fit for cricket in the west as it would support clubs that face playing difficulties, and who may fold, and discourage the creation of ‘super clubs’ who could gather up talented players from weaker clubs. There was also a concern that club resources may be allocated to player recruitment as opposed to player development. It was felt that other competitions provided in the west could be used to cater for clubs with stronger second X1’s. It was also noted that there would be less fixture planning issues by adopting this system. Movement between Tier one and two could still be considered and it would be reviewed on an annual basis. Full details of the new structure for 2023 will be shared when completed.
Following a successful trial with Premier League clubs in season 2022 the WDCU CMC has taken the decision to roll out the use of pink ball and coloured clothing to all Saturday league Cricket in 2023. The CMC fully supported the move to coloured clothing and pink ball cricket.
Reports received from the PL clubs were that it was well received by players and spectators with the only real issue being the quality of one of the balls used. This will be reviewed and recommendations as to which balls can be used will be made shortly. Coloured clothing is optional but mixed clothing is not permitted. If you plan to use coloured clothing next season please avoid any colours that would clash with the pink ball.I have attached the guidance note for 2022 for information and that will be updated for season 2023.

The WDCU CMC has taken the decision to reintroduce the provision of teas in Saturday League cricket in 2023. The CMC felt that the conditions that led to the removal of the provision of teas have now been alleviated. The CMC agreed that this decision would help develop their aspirations of a more open and welcoming culture in our clubs where visiting clubs and umpires should be deemed as guests and catered for appropriately.
All clubs should note that Cricket Scotland are reviewing the current criteria for the engagement of overseas players and coaches. The main issue concerns the current CS criteria that allows ‘Coach only’ visa holders to play local club cricket in Scotland. This was a historical agreement negotiated with the Home Office by Cricket Scotland. Updates will be forwarded on this issue as they are received.
