WDCU Saturday League Cricket – Structure 2023
The WDCU is pleased to announce the new Saturday League Structure commencing in season 2023. The Two Tier structure has been developed by CMC over a number of years with the aim of providing clubs with a suitably competitive framework whilst safegaurding the future of all our clubs.
The core structure was outlined to clubs prior to the commencement of the 2022 season and reinforced at the midway point of the season.
The new structure was prepared taking into consideration clubs finishing positions in the league in 2022. This was updated when 4 additional teams applied to and were accepted into the Saturday league structure by the CMC. The result of this is that the structure has 59 teams and they have been allocated in Two Tiers of 30(Tier 1) and 29 (Tier 2). The addition of the 4 new teams resulted in a number of teams that might have previously been relegated maintaining their position in the new structure.
Please note that there is promotion and relegation within the Tiers but not between the Tiers. The CMC will review the structure annually and should the circumstances merit it will initiate movement between the Tiers to maintain the integrity of the structure.

WDCU CMC Club Communication – October 2022.
The new WDCU CMC has met twice since its formation and below is a copy of the communication sent to all club contacts this morning regarding business in hand.
Good morning,
Following the October WDCU CMC meeting a number of decisions were taken that I have been asked to update you on.
After a considerable amount of work by the previous WDCU CMC and supported by the current CMC the Saturday League structure for 2023 will now be made up of two Tiers of three divisions. Tier one will be made up of Club 1st X1’s and Tier two will be made up of a small number of one team clubs, and second and third X1’s of other clubs. Clubs / teams will be placed in each Tier in line with their finishing position in 2022 and adjusted by the CMC where required. CMC felt that the Two-Tier system was the best fit for cricket in the west as it would support clubs that face playing difficulties, and who may fold, and discourage the creation of ‘super clubs’ who could gather up talented players from weaker clubs. There was also a concern that club resources may be allocated to player recruitment as opposed to player development. It was felt that other competitions provided in the west could be used to cater for clubs with stronger second X1’s.  It was also noted that there would be less fixture planning issues by adopting this system. Movement between Tier one and two could still be considered and it would be reviewed on an annual basis. Full details of the new structure for 2023 will be shared when completed.
Following a successful trial with Premier League clubs in season 2022 the WDCU CMC has taken the decision to roll out the use of pink ball and coloured clothing to all Saturday league Cricket in 2023. The CMC fully supported the move to coloured clothing and pink ball cricket.
Reports received from the PL clubs were that it was well received by players and spectators with the only real issue being the quality of one of the balls used. This will be reviewed and recommendations as to which balls can be used will be made shortly. Coloured clothing is optional but mixed clothing is not permitted. If you plan to use coloured clothing next season please avoid any colours that would clash with the pink ball.I have attached the guidance note for 2022 for information and that will be updated for season 2023.
The WDCU CMC has taken the decision to reintroduce the provision of teas in Saturday League cricket in 2023. The CMC felt that the conditions that led to the removal of the provision of teas have now been alleviated. The CMC agreed that this decision would help develop their aspirations of a more open and welcoming culture in our clubs where visiting clubs and umpires should be deemed as guests and catered for appropriately.
All clubs should note that Cricket Scotland are reviewing the current criteria for the engagement of overseas players and coaches. The main issue concerns the current CS criteria that allows ‘Coach only’ visa holders to play local club cricket in Scotland. This was a historical agreement negotiated with the Home Office by Cricket Scotland. Updates will be forwarded on this issue as they are received.
WDCU CMC – September Meeting Notes

In order to achieve the aim of being more open and inclusive the WDCU CMC has agreed that the notes of their meetings would be published. Sensitive or confidential issues will not be included. The meeting notes will be published once they have been approved by the CMC.

Jim Thomson – Kilmarnock CC and Scotland
Unfortunately, some very sad news to pass on. Kilmarnock CC have informed us of the passing of prominent member Jim Thomson.

A one club stalwart, Jim was simply a Kilmarnock CC legend. A left arm spin bowler with few, if any, contemporaries, throughout Scottish cricket. He played for the club between 1958 – 1992 and was the first person to take 1,000 Western Union wickets, finishing with the magnificent total of 1,220. This included 79 x 5 wicket hauls and best bowling figures of 9/39. In all matches for Kilmarnock, he took 2,049 wickets, including 137 x 5 wicket hauls.
Jim played for Scotland only 5 times. He was first capped in 1962 but had to wait a remarkable 23 years, until 1985, for his next cap.
Jim also took several roles within the club, captaining the 1st XI in seasons 1978 – 1982 and again in season 1986. He was President from 1987-1990 and held the position of Secretary from 1972-1974.
Jim’s funeral will take place at Masonhill Crematorium, Ayr on Friday 7th October at 1.15pm.
Our thoughts are with his son Paul and the rest of the family at this sad time.
