The WDCU Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday the 16th of November 2017 at Poloc CC, Shawholm, at 7pm, followed by the annual awards presentation. The minutes from the last AGM and EGM, and a list of nominees standing for election can be found here: WDCU AGM and awards night files. (Accounts and reports from the various committees, the WDJCU and Cricket Scotland will follow later.)

No additional nominations to those proposed by the Executive Committee have been received for any of the office bearer roles or committee positions due for election. If any club has changed Secretary or other contact and has not notified the WDCU, could it please do so, both to the Secretary, and also via the WDCU Administrator email address (admin@wdcu.co.uk), or, if a club’s AGM is forthcoming, please remember to advise the WDCU of any changes to contact details.

Stenhousemuir CC are currently advertising for a Head Coach to help drive forward their growing youth section. The club have made significant strides in the last two to three years with their junior membership growing rapidly and an ethos developing around the club that is welcoming, fun and at the heart of the local community.

The club run junior teams that compete in WDJCU and national cup competitions, and also deliver an extensive schools coaching programme that exposes local children to cricket and transitions them to the club. The club are part of Cricket Forth Valley that sees six local clubs work together to share best practice and grow junior cricket opportunities in the area, and they also participate in the “Thriving Clubs” programme that contracts the support of Sports Marketing Network to assist clubs to become more visible, vibrant and viable.

The current growth in junior members has now seen the club reaching capacity in terms of it’s coaching provision. Therefore, they are looking for a dedicated coach that can coordinate and lead a quality junior coaching programme and also help build the coaching capacity to ensure sustainable junior structures for the future.

We are hugely saddened to hear about the death of Grant Stanley overnight. Grant was a giant of a man who pro’d for Prestwick, Kilmarnock and Ayr in the 1970s and ’80s. His influence in cricket in Ayrshire, the west district, throughout Scotland and indeed the world, was immense. Always willing to take time with youngsters and seasoned players alike, Grant will live long in the memory of all who met him.

Cricket Scotland is delighted that its High Performance coaching team have been able to find some time during a very, very busy winter to come and deliver a Coaching Forum (two, 3-hour workshops on Saturday, 21 October) with some very interesting and relevant content.  Colin McDougall and Gill McElnea have agreed to come and deliver the Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and the Basic First Aid for Sport training on Sunday, 26 November 2017, as both courses play a crucial role in helping to keep young players within club environments safe. All of the upcoming opportunities could be of benefit to clubs and/or coaches – and Cricket Scotland looks forward to welcoming any coaches, officials and volunteers to the courses.

Cricket Scotland – West Region Coach Education and Development Calendar, 2017 – 2018

Cricket Scotland is seeking a joint lead coach for a new Western Warriors junior squad. Interested parties should send a letter of interest and a CV to Gordon Drummond by 13 October 2017.

Tim Hart, Cricket Scotland West Regional Participation Manager confirms dates for the ECB Certificate In Coaching Children’s Cricket (UKCC Level 2) course which CS are planning to run – if there is enough interest.  The course is scheduled as follows:

10am – 5pm
All Saints Secondary School, Glasgow
Saturday 7 October, Sunday 8 October, Saturday 4 November and Saturday 2 December
This course is designed to help to develop your confidence and equip you with the knowledge, understanding and applied skills to lead coaching sessions for children and create safe, fun, player-centred environments.  This course is for coaches who are going to predominantly coach children from six to thirteen years old.

Candidates need to be able to attend on all four dates.

Any person interested in the UKCC Level 2 course should contact Tim Hart direct on for more information.

Cricket Scotland are organising the above exhibition which will run from 1 November to 31 March next year in the Hampden Football Museum. The intention is to highlight the heritage of Scottish Cricket and its contribution as a national sport within Scottish society. It’s a great opportunity to show off our history and also engage with new audiences.

Cricket Scotland are looking to borrow any items which would be of interest within the exhibition, old bats, shirts, documents, photographs or paintings and cups. Basically anything that would be of interest.

Having finally been blessed with sunshine, Clydesdale defeated Stirling County by 8 wickets at Titwood on 2nd September.
County took first innings and Calum Drummond made the initial breakthrough in the 6th over, score 8-1. Matthew Tweedie (opening the batting and playing a captain’s innings) and Gavin Anderson then repaired the damage with a valuable partnership which took the total to 65-1 at drinks (20 overs). The second wicket stand was eventually broken in the 22nd over, having put on 60. The introduction of spin at both ends (Con De Lange and Hamid Mahmood) continued to stifle the run rate and a couple of run-outs, including Tweedie for 50, added to the pressure on the later batsmen. The final total of 148-8 (40 overs) was one which Clydesdale would have been confident of chasing. The wicket takers were Drummond (6-1-20-3), De Lange (8-1-23-2) and Mahmood (8-1-23-1) – all returning tidy figures. Basit Ali was wicketless on this occasion but his 5 overs for 16 runs helped to increase scoreboard pressure.
The home reply was in the hands of Mo Awais and Paddy Barbour and, when the 50 came up in the 7th over, the run chase was well and truly under way. Awais was finally out for a typically aggressive 61 in the 14th over (10 boundaries), the openers having put on a match-winning partnership of 103. De Lange’s dismissal for 16 brought Richie Berrington to the wicket and the match was concluded in satisfactory style for ‘Dale supporters as Barbour reached his 50 and the match was won by 8 wickets in the 24th over. Thomas Jones took both wickets at a cost of 33 runs.
